Medine Altiok

Medine Altiok is an architect based in Zurich and Aachen. Her work explores architecture as a civic and cultural practice across scales, with a particular focus on intercultural spaces, collective life and the transformation of existing structures. Her projects range from the Muslim Burial and Prayer House in Hamburg to public, community and housing projects in Switzerland and Germany.

Alongside her practice, she has taught at ETH Zurich, RWTH Aachen, Istanbul Bilgi University and the Architectural Association in London. Her research and teaching engage with migration, cultural continuity, participation and territorial transformation.

Together with Stephanie Tunka, she co-founded mittelmeerland.org, an international research and teaching platform investigating the urban transformation of the Mediterranean. Rather than understanding the Mediterranean as the edge of separate territories, the project looks at it from the perspective of the sea itself, as a shared spatial, cultural and ecological condition shaped by migration, infrastructure, trade, climate and changing forms of urbanisation.
